Enfermedad sistémica caracterizada por la acumulación de granulomas no caseificantes (formados por linfocitos T y macrófagos) que distorsionan la estructura tisular del órgano donde asientan y alteran su función. Afecta a múltiples órganos del cuerpo esencialmente a los pulmones y los ganglios linfáticos. Además, puede afectar a la piel, ojos, articulaciones, hígado, corazón…

Su distribución es universal con preferencia por adultos menores de 40 años y un ligero predominio en el sexo femenino.

La mayoría de los pacientes debutan con síntomas generales como cansancio, pérdida de apetito y de peso o fiebre. Un gran número refiere además dolor retroesternal, tos y dificultad para respirar.

El compromiso ungueal es raro en pacientes con sarcoidosis.
