Las bandas blancas transversales pueden muchas veces ser secundarias a trauma de la matriz proximal a nivel del pliegue ungueal proximal (hiponiquio).

Sin embargo, algunas líneas blancas transversales como las de Muehrcke y Mees pueden ser manifestaciones de enfermedades sistémicas.

Las líneas de Muehrcke son transversales, blanquecinas y habitualmente en número de dos. La lámina ungueal conserva un aspecto normal, liso y brillante. A medida que la uña crece, las lesiones avanzan hasta el borde libre, apareciendo como una descamación en láminas (onicosquizia).

Descritas en pacientes con hipoalbuminemia o anemias intensas.

Las líneas de Mees aparecen después de un episodio de envenenamiento con arsénico, talio u otros metales pesados y pueden verse en pacientes que padecen insuficiencia renal.
